PGS Certificates for our organic famers

Congratulations to Indawgyi’s organic farmers who have achieved yet another monumental milestone. More than 200 people came together at the Indawgyi Wetland Education Centre to celebrate and honour the 71 farmers of the Indawgyi Nature Farming Association (INFA) who finally received their Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS) [link] certifications. Throughout the past year, Fauna & Flora International (FFI) supported the certification process, and in a solemn ceremony U Kyaw Kyaw Win, Kachin State minister of agriculture, livestock and irrigation, handed the well-deserved certificates over to Indawgyi’s proud organic farmers.

PGS are locally focused quality assurance systems, which certify producers based on active participation of stakeholders. Trust, social networks and knowledge exchange are the foundation of the certificate to assure long-lasting impacts and success. The development and implementation of PGS is supported by IFOAM – Organics International, the global umbrella organisation of the organic agriculture movement. However, as an alternative tool for third-party certification within the organic sector the government is responsible for the final recognition of organic farmers. The PGS certification assures transparent and inclusive organic farming practices and improves the recognition of Indawgyi’s organic products on the global market. We are confident that INFA’s passion and conviction to achieve the PSG certification will inspire other farmers in Indawgyi Lake to participate in our organic farming programme.
